18-mile ultra marathon training D-20

Twenty days before the ultra marathon, we gathered at 7 a.m. in front of the William M. Powell Bridge. Despite the early hour, the heat was already nearing 90 degrees —a true Miami morning. After a quick warm-up, we began our 16-mile round trip to the Crandon Park Lighthouse.

Because I had a minor procedure a few days prior, I decided to walk along the beach by myself instead of running. Under the scorching sun, I saw countless people pushing their limits and sweating it out. It was inspiring to see such a diverse group of people: veteran runners tirelessly jogging the roads, vibrant walkers, people with perfectly toned bodies, others like me who need to lose weight, and even those in rehabilitation. I could feel everyone's pure passion.

I walked past the Miami Seaquarium to the Crandon Marina and back again. Three hours had already passed. I wondered if the Miami Running Crew team had made it past the Key Biscayne Crandon Lighthouse yet, and worried that someone might have collapsed in the heat. I hoped everyone would safely complete the 16 miles.

At 12:05 p.m., the Miami Running Crew (MRC) 1, 2 and 3 returned, and 10 minutes later, the MRC 4 and 5  arrived. Considering the 6-hour time limit for the Georgia Jewel Ultra Marathon, it seems everyone will be able to finish.

Go MRC Team!

MRC (Miami Running Crew)

Labor Day Picnic at Key Biscayne: War on Mosquitoes

This Labor Day holiday, my daughter, who came down from Atlanta, and I went on a picnic to Key Biscayne. With the blue ocean spread out before us, our eyes and minds felt refreshed.

We climbed the lighthouse at Crandon Park and started our day pleasantly, walking half and running half of the 2.5-mile course along lush forest paths and beach trails. But then... following the suffocating humidity and heat, a swarm of mosquitoes suddenly descended!

But we have our "pro camper" husband! He brought a portable fan, almost too massive for camping, and blasted us with air. Thanks to him, we were temporarily free from the heat and mosquito attack, and preparing our meal in the shade was much more comfortable. My husband is the best, as always!

The highlight of the day was the mung bean pancakes my daughter wanted, made by Mom! We brought the batter from home and cooked them sizzling hot with the ocean as a backdrop... Wow, this was truly delicious! Adding grilled meat to that made it even better. Indeed, any meal eaten outdoors is the best.

Those brief moments of eating and resting while gazing at the blue Atlantic were a perfect paradise. If only there hadn't been mosquitoes ☹

From Head to Toe, $1,500 on Running Gear, Really?

How much is my running gear actually worth?

Lately, interest in running has been heating up. It's now a common sight to see runners energetically jogging along parks and riversides. But it made me wonder, "How much is all the gear I'm wearing right now worth?"

What started as a simple hobby has evolved, and I've found myself paying attention to every piece of equipment. The reasons vary—some seek better performance or injury prevention, while others simply like the aesthetic. Regardless of the motive, those who are serious about running tend to invest more in their gear. This is particularly true for joint health, which is a crucial consideration for a long-term running hobby.

So, I decided to do a calculation. I estimated the costs of the running items I commonly use, brand by brand. Today, I'd also like to touch on the relationship between arthritis and running shoes.

My Running Gear List

Just mentioning the names of these sports brands is enough. The estimated prices of each product were surprising. Running shoes, in particular, require careful selection as they directly affect your feet, knees, and hip joints. If you have arthritis, choosing shoes with excellent shock absorption is incredibly important.

Tallying Up the Price Tag from Head to Toe

*Note: The prices above are approximate estimates based on current online and offline store prices and can vary depending on the model and discount rates. Especially for running shoes, the right model can differ based on an individual’s foot shape, running style, and joint condition. If you have arthritis, it's best to consult a professional before making a careful choice.

Total: Approximately $1,000 to $1,500 or more

While the cost of each item seemed manageable on its own, the total quickly surpassed $1,500. Of course, you could save money by choosing basic models for each item, or the total could be much higher if you stick to top-of-the-line gear and factor in a few race entry fees per year.

In my case, I alternate between several brands and own multiple items for each category, not just one or two, so my actual investment is likely even higher. I especially own several pairs of running shoes with various types of cushioning and features, which I switch between depending on my condition and the type of training.

What Does the '$1,500' Figure Say, and What Does It Mean for Arthritis?

You might simply think, "That's expensive." But in a way, this amount is also an indicator of how serious I am about running. I believe investing in running shoes is especially important for the sake of joint health.

Good gear undoubtedly leads to a better running experience. Lightweight, breathable clothing keeps you comfortable, and running shoes with excellent shock absorption reduce the stress on your feet, knees, and hip joints, which can help prevent and alleviate arthritis. A sports watch that provides accurate data allows for more systematic training.

Of course, the most important things are the desire to run and consistency. However, I believe that investing in the right gear—especially shoes that consider joint health—is a worthwhile effort that makes running a safer and more enjoyable hobby. If you have arthritis, it is even more critical to choose your shoes carefully and avoid overexerting yourself.

What about your running gear? What's the total cost of your setup? And what efforts are you making for your joint health? I hope this is an opportunity for you to check your own gear, and especially to reconsider your running shoes.

My Running Story: An Arthritis Diagnosis and a 15-Mile Miracle

In 2010, I was afraid to even walk. After being diagnosed with arthritis, everyday movements felt like a great burden. But my husband didn't give up on me. He made me walk the 15-mile course in Shark Valley within Florida's Everglades National Park, and that walk was the beginning of my running life. This is the story of my journey of overcoming fear and finding new meaning in life through running.

My First Step Beyond Fear: The 5K Challenge

A year after I started walking, in 2011, I participated in my first 5K marathon at Zoo Miami. Although I walked almost 95% of it, the sense of accomplishment I felt when crossing the finish line is still vivid. The pride of that day instilled in me the confidence that "I can do it too," and I gradually discovered the joy of running by also taking on the Burger King 5K.

With My Husband, and With a Running Crew

My husband has always been the biggest supporter and companion on my running journey. While I was challenging myself with 5Ks, my husband gradually increased his distance. He constantly inspired me by conquering 10Ks, the Miami Half Marathon, a full marathon, and even the Key West 100-miler and the Jewel-Trail Running 50-miler in Georgia. In the meantime, like-minded acquaintances started joining us one by one. Now, we have become a passionate running crew in our 50s and 60s, participating in various marathons together. Our next goal is a new challenge: trail running.

Consistency Over Speed, the Joy of Being Together

Every Sunday at dawn, we gather to train, build our stamina, and strengthen our friendship by sharing our lives with one another. My arthritis still flares up, but now I can run without stopping. Of course, my 16-minute/mile pace is the catch! 😄 That's why I often act as the group's manager. However, through running, I've realized that what's more important than speed is consistency and the joy of running together.

Running, and Its Greater Meaning

For me, running has become more than just exercise; it is a source of vitality in my life and the driving force that allows me to overcome fear and take on new challenges. Above all, the bond with the people I run with has enriched my life. My running journey, which began with an arthritis diagnosis, will continue. I hope you too will not be afraid, but will run at your own pace and discover the joy of running together!
