33 Years Together, and a Son’s Gift of a 'Heartwarming Fullness

Our balcony is already at full capacity. This is all "thanks" to my husband, who insists on bringing home bouquets or small potted plants for every anniversary, birthday, and even our children’s birthdays. While some of these green companions have flourished under my care and claimed their spot on the balcony, quite a few, unfortunately, withered away all too quickly in my hands.

May is a month packed with events, and today marks one of them: our wedding anniversary. Looking at the balcony already overflowing with greenery, I was just about to sternly warn my husband, "Don't you dare bring any flowers home this time." But right then, my phone gave a cheerful chirp.

"Kkatalk!"

It was a message from my son: "Fogo de Chão, 2 people, Reserved under Lee GH."

Oh my goodness. My son had booked a restaurant for us. To be honest, after a long day, I usually don't want to lift a finger and leaving the house feels like a monumental task. But since my son offered to drive us there himself, I happily set out.

We went to Fogo de Chão, a famous Brazilian steakhouse established in 1979. It’s a rodízio-style restaurant where chefs called "Gauchos" carry around skewers of meat and carve them right at your table. They say it’s paradise for meat lovers.

Being my first time, I felt a bit shy as I took my seat. We ordered the "All You Can Eat" course and headed to the salad bar with excitement. However, I hit a snag; the first plate I picked up had sauce smudged on it. I pointed it out to the manager and picked up another, but that one wasn't clean either. In my head, I shouted, "Minus 20 points!" and finally found a clean plate to fill with salad.

However, the moment the meat started arriving, my complaints vanished. No sooner had we sat down than chicken wrapped in bacon, beef steak, and lamb chops began appearing in succession. Along with mashed potatoes, fried yucca, and sweet plantains glazed in wine... the table was a literal feast.

The most amusing part was the small disc on the table. Green means "Keep it coming," and red means "Pause." Even when we flipped it to red, the servers kept bringing meat to our table. My husband and I burst out laughing, wondering if we just looked like people who could eat forever.

By the time we felt like we were about to burst and couldn't eat another bite, we asked for the bill. But when the server brought it over, our son's credit card was already tucked inside.

Oh... this boy hadn't just made the reservation; he had paid for the meal in advance. This unexpected surprise brought a lump to my throat. When did he grow up to be such an adult, thoughtful enough to take care of his parents' anniversary? I felt so grateful and proud that my eyes grew a little misty.

Carrying that pleasant fullness, we decided to walk back home. It’s about a 10-minute walk. My husband is a man of very few words, but as we felt the cool May night breeze, we shared a long conversation. Come to think of it, we’ve been married for 33 years. In that time, we have aged 33 years’ worth, but we have also grown together by that same measure.

Thanks to our son’s gift—which left a fragrance deeper than any flower—this year’s anniversary will be remembered as more heartwarming than any other.

Thank you so much, son.
