Twenty days before the ultra marathon, we gathered at 7
a.m. in front of the William M. Powell Bridge. Despite the early hour,
the heat was already nearing 90 degrees —a true Miami morning. After
a quick warm-up, we began our 16-mile round trip to the Crandon Park
Lighthouse.
Because I had a minor procedure a few days prior, I decided
to walk along the beach by myself instead of running. Under the scorching sun,
I saw countless people pushing their limits and sweating it out. It was
inspiring to see such a diverse group of people: veteran runners tirelessly
jogging the roads, vibrant walkers, people with perfectly toned bodies, others
like me who need to lose weight, and even those in rehabilitation. I could feel
everyone's pure passion.
I walked past the Miami Seaquarium to the Crandon
Marina and back again. Three hours had already passed. I wondered if the Miami
Running Crew team had made it past the Key Biscayne Crandon Lighthouse yet,
and worried that someone might have collapsed in the heat. I hoped everyone
would safely complete the 16 miles.
At 12:05 p.m., the Miami
Running Crew (MRC) 1, 2 and 3 returned, and 10 minutes later, the MRC 4 and 5 arrived. Considering the 6-hour time limit for the Georgia Jewel Ultra
Marathon, it seems everyone will be able to finish.
Go MRC Team!
